Free Goods:

  • Definition: Free goods are resources that are abundant and available without any price.
  • Characteristics:
    • These goods are available in abundant supply.
    • These goods do not command a price. These are available free of cost.
    • These are free gifts of nature.
    • Scarce resources are not required in their production.
  • Examples: Air, sunlight, and seawater are often considered free goods because they are generally available to everyone without direct payment.

Economic Goods:

  • Definition: Economic goods are those that are scarce in relation to demand and require resources to produce. They are bought and sold in the market.
  • Characteristics:
    • These goods are limited in supply.
    • These goods command the price. To obtain such goods, one has to pay any price.
    • Economic goods are man-made.
    • Scarce resources are used to produce such goods.
  • Examples: Food, clothing, cars, electronics and furniture etc. are all economic goods because they are limited in supply and require effort and resources to produce.
