Allow white light to pass through a glass prism. The emergent band on the screen is the visible spectrum. The colours appear in the order:
VIBGYOR
- Violet: most deviated
- Indigo
- Blue
- Green
- Yellow
- Orange
- Red: least deviated
Red travels fastest in glass and is refracted least; violet travels slowest in glass and is refracted most. Therefore the prism separates white light into its component colours.
