If the king decided to journey to the forest outside his city, the news might have spread, and the hermit might have gotten wind of it. Also, the enemy was hiding around the hermit’s hut. Since the hermit had lived there for a long time, he must have known every inch of his surroundings and would have figured out immediately if someone had entered the surroundings. Thus, in my opinion, the hermit was aware of the king’s arrival and the enemy, who was in hiding, beforehand.
