Describe the factors which have influenced the pattern of railway network in India. Support your answer with suitable examples from different parts of India.

1. Geographical Factors:
   • The physical geography of India greatly affects railway development. The Northern Indian plains, with their level land, high population density, and rich agriculture, offer favourable conditions for railway expansion. However, many rivers necessitate constructing expensive bridges.
   • In contrast, the Himalayan region is largely devoid of railways due to rugged terrain, valleys, and unstable geological formations, making construction difficult and costly. Some narrow gauge lines exist in the foothills but overall railway presence is sparse.
   • Other regions like the plateau of South India, sandy deserts of Rajasthan, dense forests in Madhya Pradesh and northeastern states, and marshy or deltaic areas are also less favorable for railway construction due to challenging terrain and sparse population.
2. Economic Factors: 
   • Railways tend to develop more in economically advanced areas where the need for connectivity is greater. Conversely, the presence of railways itself stimulates economic prosperity in the regions they serve.
   • Regions with dense population, agriculture, industry, and urbanization, such as the North Indian plains and certain parts of Peninsular India, have a denser railway network.
3. Political and Administrative Factors: 
   • Historically, during British colonial rule, the railway network was primarily designed to connect port cities with production centers in the interior for economic exploitation, which influenced the pattern of rail lines.
   • Political boundaries, presence of foreign enclaves, and autonomous princely states also posed obstacles to creating a uniform and integrated rail network.
   • The capital Delhi serves as a major rail junction for political and administrative reasons as well.
