Caste remains a significant influence on social and political life in India. Political parties and their leaders continue to use the caste system to rally popular support and secure votes. Casteism and related concerns continue to pose a significant barrier to Indian democracy.
- Caste and political socialism: Different caste groupings identify with specific political parties and ideologies. ‘Caste values’ and ‘caste interests’ influence socialization, which affects people’s political thinking and perceptions. This includes offering policies beneficial to specific castes or engaging in caste-based campaigns.
- Caste and leadership recruitment: The caste structure influences the process of leadership recruitment. For example, in Haryana, leaders are typically Jats, Bishnois, or Brahmins.
- Caste and party politics: Caste is an essential component of Indian party politics. Some political parties strategically target various castes to obtain votes during elections. The caste system has a significant impact on and is dependent upon certain regional parties.

All political parties give importance to the caste factor in selecting their candidates, in allocating constituencies to their candidates, and in securing support. In a few regions, votes are demanded in the name of caste.
- Role of caste in government making: As caste is an important factor in Indian society and politics, it plays an important role in the decision-making process of the political parties. The parties try to use the favour of major caste groups while making important decisions. Caste determines the voting behaviour, the party structure and government making process and hence, recruitment to political offices is done keeping the caste in mind.
- Caste and local politics: Communicating with local or rural people on caste lines can mobilise support from them. They constitute a vote bank and serve as a link between leaders, political processes, parties, and voters. Caste has been the major factor which is a hindrance in the smooth functioning of the rural and urban local institutions.
- Caste violence: Caste-based violence is very frequent in party politics and during elections. The differences between high and low castes get accentuated into a violent power struggle at times.
Thus, caste plays an all-around role in Indian politics.
