The main features of the Nav Nirman movement of Gujarat are as follows:
- The Nav Nirman Movement began in December, 1973 in Ahmedabad, when students demonstrated against an increase in the cost of food in the dorms at L.D. Engineering College.
- Soon, the movement spread across the whole state as a protest against fraud, rising prices, and bad leadership by Chief Minister Chimanbhai Patel.
- Students, teachers, and middle-class citizens formed the Nav Nirman Yuvak Samiti to coordinate protests.
- Chief Minister Chimanbhai Patel had to step down on 9th February, 1974, due to significant public unrest and support for the movement.
- On 16th March, 1974, the Gujarat Legislative Assembly was disbanded, and President’s Rule took over.
- It was the first action of the people in independent India that led to the removal of an elected government.
