उत्तर

Social movements are collective actions aimed at bringing change in society. Some movements work to resist changes they oppose. These movements are classified into different types based on their objectives, scale, and methods.

Types of Social Movements are:

  1. Revolutionary Movements: These movements seek to bring total transformation in society by replacing the existing system with a new one. They often involve protests, revolts, or even wars, and may be violent or non-violent. For example, the Indian Freedom Movement aimed to end British rule and achieve independence for India.
  2. Reform Movements: Reform movements aim to bring gradual improvements in society rather than overthrowing the existing system. They seek to improve social, political, or economic conditions. For example, the Women’s Rights Movement worked for equality by demanding rights such as voting, education, and equal pay.
  3. Redemptive Movements: These movements aim at changing individuals by promoting spiritual, moral, or lifestyle improvements. They encourage people to adopt certain values. For example, religious revival movements urge individuals to follow their faith and promote moral values and spiritual beliefs.
  4. Alternative Movements: Alternative movements focus on making limited and specific changes instead of bringing major social transformations. They aim to influence personal habits and promote healthier choices. For example, anti-alcohol movements raise awareness and encourage people to reduce or give up alcohol consumption.
  5. Resistance Movements: Resistance movements oppose particular changes and seek to prevent or reverse laws, policies, or social developments they consider harmful. For example, protests against globalisation challenge the influence of large foreign companies and aim to protect local businesses and industries.

Social movements play an important role in society by bringing positive change and also by safeguarding traditions and values from changes that are considered undesirable.
