  1. Prenatal developmental period: The prenatal period begins at the moment of conception and lasts for about 280 days, or approximately nine calendar months. Although it spans a relatively short time, development during this stage is extremely rapid. During this period, the human embryo or fetus grows within the mother’s womb, and the formation of nearly all major body organs takes place.
  2. Period of Infancy: This stage spans from birth to around 10 to 14 days and is known as the neonatal period, a phase often referred to as a rest or plateau in human development. During this time, the newborn must adapt to life outside the mother’s womb, learning to breathe and feed independently. As the baby adjusts to the new environment, development is minimal, and there may even be a slight decrease in weight due to the energy used for this adjustment. Once the infant successfully adapts, rapid development typically begins.
  3. Babyhood: Babyhood typically begins around the third week after birth and continues until the age of two. This stage is often referred to as the “age of helplessness” because the child is entirely dependent on others for basic needs such as feeding, bathing, urination, elimination, sleeping, and dressing. During this period, the child also undergoes toilet training. By the end of the second year, the child gradually gains control over muscles and bodily functions, slowly learning to eat, drink, dress, walk, play, and talk independently. Many children begin to show a desire to perform tasks on their own, reflecting growing independence and self-reliance.
  4. Childhood: Childhood spans from around age 2 to 12 or 13. Once the child gains control over their physical functions, they begin to exert control over their environment. A key focus during this stage is learning social adaptation. To gain social acceptance, children start to behave according to social norms, customs, and traditions. They begin to show respect toward elders, express affection toward peers, and display courteous behavior, such as welcoming guests. Between the ages of 6 and 12, there is significant development in social and moral behavior. This phase is often referred to as the “gang age”, where children enjoy group activities and develop a strong interest in social interactions.
  5. Adolescence: The stage from approximately 11 to 13 years to 21 years is known as adolescence. This period is typically divided into three phases: Pre-adolescence, Early adolescence, and Late adolescence. Pre-adolescence lasts up to around 11 to 13 years in girls and around 13 years in boys. It often aligns with the college-going years. During this time, individuals begin adjusting to their environment, seek greater independence, and start making plans for their future based on personal preferences. Late adolescence marks the final phase of this extended developmental stage.
