- Basic moves: In volleyball, players use passes, serves, sets, spikes, blocks and digs. Good movement starts with a balanced stance—knees bent, feet ready to move and eyes on the ball. Players move into the ball’s path and make controlled contact using the forearms, fingertips or palm, depending on the skill.
- Shifting body weight: Players use their legs and body to help control the ball, rather than relying only on their arms. They shift weight forward when serving or sending the ball towards a target, and extend their legs while passing or setting. During a spike, the legs and torso also help generate power. After contact, they stay balanced and ready for the next move.
- Effect on the ball’s trajectory: The direction and angle of the arms or hands, together with the force applied, determine where the ball travels. A firm, correctly angled forearm platform can direct a pass towards the setter; extending the legs and arms can send it higher. In a block, angling the hands downwards deflects the opponent’s spike towards their court. Thus, controlled body movement and weight transfer help players direct the ball accurately and change its trajectory.
