Before 1834, German states used various currencies, weights, and measures. There were several customs barriers for a merchant. All of these barriers prevented the nation’s union. Friedrich List intended to unite the nation by emphasising the concept of national economy and economic policies that may help bring the nation together. According to him, the customs union, or Zollverein, was efficient in enhancing production while also stirring national sentiments. It should stimulate and strengthen national consciousness by combining individual and provincial concerns. The German people have understood that a free economic system is the best way to foster national identity.
