उत्तर
For this activity, I collected different rock specimens from places around my home and during travel. I observed their colour, texture, hardness, weight, grain size, layers and porosity. With the help of my teacher, I classified them into igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
| Sr. No. | Rock specimen | Type of rock | Place collected from | Main features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Basalt | Igneous | Hill area/roadside in Maharashtra | Dark grey or black, hard, compact and fine-grained. |
| 2. | Granite | Igneous | Rocky area/construction site | Light coloured with black, white and pink mineral grains; very hard. |
| 3. | Sandstone | Sedimentary | River bed/rocky slope | Brown or reddish, grainy and often seen in layers. |
| 4. | Limestone | Sedimentary | Quarry/hilly region | Whitish or grey, comparatively soft and may contain fossils. |
| 5. | Laterite | Sedimentary-type weathered rock | Konkan region, especially Ratnagiri or Sindhudurg | Reddish-brown, porous and rich in iron. |
| 6. | Marble | Metamorphic | Building-stone shop/travel specimen | White or coloured, hard, smooth and can be polished. |
| 7. | Slate | Metamorphic | Hilly area/stone market | Dark grey, fine-grained and splits into thin sheets. |
