उत्तर
During British colonial rule, Indian agriculture was changed mainly to benefit British industries. Farmers were encouraged or forced to grow cash crops like indigo, cotton, and opium instead of food crops. Heavy land taxes and systems such as the Permanent Settlement placed a great burden on farmers, pushing many into debt and poverty. The British also used railways to transport agricultural products and raw materials quickly to ports for export.
Some of these effects can still be seen today. Farmers in India continue to face problems such as debt, low crop prices, poor irrigation, and pressure to grow cash crops. The unequal relationship between large landowners and agricultural labourers also continues in some areas. Thus, colonial policies had a long-lasting impact on Indian agriculture.
