• Crime refers to any act that violates the law and is punishable by the state. It includes a wide range of offences, such as theft, murder, assault, and fraud. Crimes disrupt social order, harm individuals or property, and are subject to legal penalties like imprisonment, fines, or probation.
• Delinquency, on the other hand, refers specifically to unlawful or antisocial behavior committed by juveniles, typically individuals under the age of 18. Acts such as truancy, vandalism, substance abuse, and minor theft fall under juvenile delinquency. Though less severe than adult crimes, delinquent acts are considered early warning signs for future criminal behaviour if left unaddressed.
• While both crime and delinquency involve breaking the law, delinquency is age-specific and often receives more reformative attention, focusing on rehabilitation rather than punishment. Both are significant concerns in society and require tailored prevention and correctional strategies.
