• At the end of the conversation, write a message as Herbert to Mr. White, suggesting to him what precautions the family should take.

Friend 1:	Herbert, you said your father thought the paw moved when he made his wish. Morris warned your family that the wishes could bring trouble. Please take that seriously.
Herbert:	Dad was frightened, but it was probably only his imagination. There’s nothing to worry about.
Friend 2:	Even if you doubt the story, be careful. Stay away from dangerous machinery and don’t let anyone use the paw again.
Friend 3:	Oh, come on! It’s just a spooky story. Nothing will happen. Let’s get back to work.
Friend 1:	Don’t laugh it off. Your father wished for two hundred pounds. If something happens, your family will need to be ready.
Herbert:	I suppose it can’t hurt to be cautious. I’ll speak to my parents and keep away from the paw.

Message from Herbert to Mr. White:

Dear Dad, Morris’s warning has been on my mind. Please don’t make any more wishes, and keep the paw somewhere safe where no one can use it. Check that the doors and bolts are working properly, and be careful around anything dangerous. Let’s not take chances. Love, Herbert.
