Aunt Jennifer created animals that are very different from her own character because she herself is weak, timid and oppressed, whereas the tigers she creates are fearless, confident and free. The tigers “prance proudly” and are not afraid of men. Through this contrast, the poet suggests Aunt Jennifer’s deep desire for strength, freedom and a life without fear. The tigers represent the qualities she wishes to possess but cannot express in her real life because of her husband's dominance.
