उत्तर

The corpus luteum degenerates if the ovum is not fertilized. It persists for about 9 days after ovulation (roughly until the 23rd day of the ovarian cycle) and secretes progesterone during this period. Without fertilization, the corpus luteum begins to degenerate, progesterone levels decline, and the endometrium breaks down leading to menstruation. As it degenerates, the corpus luteum is converted into a fibrous tissue called corpus albicans, which disappears by the 28th day of the ovarian cycle.

If fertilization and implantation occur, the corpus luteum continues to grow and secrete progesterone to maintain the pregnancy, supported by chorionic gonadotropin secreted by the embryo.
