Let the number be x.

It is given that two times this number increased by 5 equals 9.

∴ 2x + 5 = 9

⇒ 2x = 9 – 5

⇒ 2x = 4

⇒ x = 2   ...[Dividing both sides by 2]

Hence, the required number is 2.
