उत्तर

This phenomenon is called ‘resonance’. In this phenomenon when a body begins with the natural frequency of the others vibrating body B, then A begins to vibrate violently with the maximum amplitude.
The frame of a motorcycle along with the rearview mirror is found to vibrate violently when it is driven to a particular speed, this happens when the frame has the natural frequency of vibration equal to that of the piston when the engine is driven at that particular, speed.

Define the resonance phenomenon.

In following figure shows  A, B , C and D represent test tube each of height 20 cm which are filled with water up to heights of 12 cm, 14 cm, 16cm and 18cm respectively. If a vibrating tuning fork is placed over the mouth if test tube D, a loud sound is heard.

  1. Describe the observations with the tubes A, B and C when the vibrating tuning fork is placed over the mouth of these tubes.
  2. Give the reason for your observation in each case.
  3. State the principle illustrated by the above experiment.

Write down the factors on which the frequency of vibrating depends. Explain them.

What is meant by resonance? Give two examples of resonance from daily life.

The diagram below shows three different modes of vibration P, Q and R of the same string of a given length.

P Q R
  1. Which vibration will produce a louder sound and why?
  2. Which vibration will produce sound of maximum shrillness (or pitch) and why?
  3. What is the ratio of wavelength of vibrations P and R?

When acoustic resonance takes place, a loud sound is heard. Why does this happen? Explain.

Explain a tuning fork (vibrating) is held close to ear. One hears a faint sound. The same vibrating tuning fork is placed on table, such that its handle is in contact with table, one hears a loud sound.

Explain a person walking past a railway line, in the middle of night hears a ringing sound along with the sound of his footsteps.

What do you understand by forced vibrations?

What are the factors that affect the frequency of a vibrating string and how do they affect the frequency?
