• Establish regulations to define standards and guidelines related to food articles and develop a system to enforce these standards.
• Set up mechanisms and guidelines for accrediting certification bodies that certify food safety practices for food businesses.
• Create procedures and guidelines for accrediting laboratories and officially notifying the accredited laboratories.
• Offer scientific advice and technical support to the Central and State Governments for framing policies and rules concerning food safety and nutrition.
• Gather and compile data on food consumption patterns and the presence and spread of biological risks and contaminants and residues, and identify emerging risks, along with setting up a rapid alert system.
• Build an information network across the country to ensure that the public, consumers, and Panchayats receive fast, reliable, and objective information about food safety concerns.
• Organise training programmes for individuals engaged or intending to engage in food businesses.
• Support the development of international food standards, including sanitary and phytosanitary measures.
• Promote general public awareness regarding food safety and food standards.
