The following characteristics of motivation can be identified:

1. Motivation is a psychological concept: It stems from internal human needs. These needs arise when a person feels the absence of something important. Such internal feelings drive a person's behaviour and influence their actions.
2. Motivation is total, not piece-meal: An individual cannot be partially motivated. Since a person’s needs are interconnected and he functions as a whole, meeting only some of those needs will not be enough to truly motivate him.
3. Motivation is a continuous process: It doesn’t happen just once or for a limited time. Human desires never end when one need is fulfilled, another soon takes its place. As McGregor said, “Man is a wanting animal,” and the cycle of needs continues endlessly.
4. Motivation causes goal-directed behaviour: People act in ways that help them achieve their needs or goals. As long as someone feels their work helps meet these needs, they will stay engaged. If the activity no longer seems useful in fulfilling their needs, they may lose interest.
5. Motivation may be financial or non-financial: The kind of motivation depends on what type of need is being addressed. Financial motivators include salary, bonuses, and benefits, while non-financial ones include recognition, increased responsibility, involvement in decisions, or interesting tasks.
6. Motivation is a complex process: There is no single method that works for everyone. Since every person is driven by different needs, a manager must understand these differences and use a mix of rewards to meet them. Also, results cannot be expected instantly.
