प्रश्न

Show diagrammatically the behaviour of magnetic field lines in the presence of (i) paramagnetic and (ii) diamagnetic substances. How does one explain this distinguishing feature?

उत्तर

(i) The behaviour of magnetic field lines in the presence of a diamagnetic substance is shown below:

(ii) The behaviour of magnetic field lines in the presence of a paramagnetic substance is shown below:

This distinguishing feature is because of the difference in their relative permeabilities. The relative permeability of the diamagnetic substance is less than 1; so, the magnetic lines of force do not prefer passing through the substance. The relative permeability of a paramagnetic substance is greater than 1; so, the magnetic lines of force prefer passing through the substance.

Magnetic field lines are always nearly normal to the surface of a ferromagnet at every point. (This fact is analogous to the static electric field lines being normal to the surface of a conductor at every point.) Why?

S is the surface of a lump of magnetic material.

  1. Lines of B are necessarily continuous across S.
  2. Some lines of B must be discontinuous across S.
  3. Lines of H are necessarily continuous across S.
  4. Lines of H cannot all be continuous across S.
