I spoke with an MLA and learnt about some major challenges faced by the state legislature. One important concern is the frequent absence of members during important discussions, which can affect the quality of debates. Disruptions in the House can also delay proceedings and prevent meaningful discussions. Some bills may take a long time to pass because of delays or insufficient debate. At times, discussions become more politically focused rather than addressing important public issues. The MLA also stressed the need for better-informed and active citizens. Greater public participation, especially among young people, can help make the legislature more effective and responsive to people’s needs.
