I. Why These Books Are Useful (What They Tell Us)

1. Military Setup: Megasthenes explains that the army was divided into six special groups to handle things like horses, elephants, foot soldiers, and boats.
2. City Management: The texts show how the capital city, Pataliputra, was cleanly run by local boards to keep markets fair and safe.
3. Birth & Death Records: Megasthenes mentions that officials wrote down all births and deaths to keep a proper census for tax collection.
4. Spy Network: The Arthashastra details a large network of royal spies who secretly gathered news to protect the king from rebellions.
5. Control of Money: Both books show that the government strictly decided tax rates on farming and controlled profitable gold and iron mines.

II. Why We Must Be Careful (Their Limitations)

• Missing Books: Megasthenes’ original book is completely lost. We only have small pieces of it that other writers copied later on.
• Foreign Mistakes: Because Megasthenes was from Greece, he did not fully understand Indian society and mistakenly claimed that there was no slavery in India.
• Caste Confusion: He incorrectly wrote that Indian society was split into exactly seven castes based only on jobs.
• Rules vs. Reality: The Arthashastra is a textbook of rules on what a king should do. It does not prove that every king followed these rules perfectly.
• Not for the Whole Empire: These strict laws were mostly followed near the capital and were not used in distant forest areas or borders.
