The promise of “Garibi Hatao” was not fulfilled quickly. Economic hardship worsened after 1971–72: inflation rose sharply, unemployment remained high, food-grain output fell, and the Bangladesh crisis and oil-price increases strained the economy. Poor people were among those most affected.
