The roads in India are classified into the following types 

1. National Highways: These are main roads constructed and maintained by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). They connect state capitals, big cities, and important ports. National Highways constitute about 1.94% of total road length but carry about 40% of the traffic.
2. State Highways: Constructed and maintained by the State Public Works Department (PWD), these roads connect state capitals with district headquarters and other important towns. They are also connected to the National Highways.
3. District Roads: These roads connect the district headquarters to other places within the district.
4. Rural Roads: These roads connect villages to neighbouring towns and cities, often being dusty tracks. There have been efforts to connect villages with metalled roads.
5. Urban Roads: Roads serving the urban areas.
6. Project Roads: Roads that serve various projects launched in the country.
7. Border Roads: Managed by the Border Roads Development Board, these roads improve connectivity and defence preparedness in border areas and difficult terrains.
