1. Reasons for Formation and Benefits to Workers: Trade unions are primarily formed to protect employees from exploitation and to establish a unified voice for collective bargaining with management. Workers are motivated to join because the union acts as a shield, negotiating for fair wages, reasonable working hours, and essential statutory benefits like provident funds and gratuity. Beyond financial gains, unions provide crucial non-economic benefits, such as safeguarding job security, demanding safe working conditions, and offering legal representation during workplace grievances, ensuring that an individual worker never has to face corporate disputes alone.
2. Pressure from Liberalisation and Globalisation: The government policies of economic liberalisation and globalisation have undoubtedly placed immense pressure on traditional trade unions. As domestic markets opened up to fierce global competition, industries were forced to drastically reduce labour costs to remain profitable. This led to a surge in privatisation, outsourcing, and the widespread hiring of temporary or contract workers who are much harder to unionise. Consequently, the traditional base of permanent employees has shrunk, significantly weakening the collective bargaining power of unions and making it increasingly difficult for them to enforce demands or call for effective strikes against multinational employers.
