- According to Jean Piaget, children’s thinking evolves throughout time. Individuals progress through four phases of mental development, each representing a significant improvement in their understanding of the world.
As children progress through developmental stages, their thinking becomes more complicated and mature. Younger children may only grasp what they can see or touch, whereas older children and teenagers develop abstract and logical thinking skills. This theory explains how children’s reasoning abilities develop, from basic actions like grabbing toys to more complex thinking like solving math problems or questioning morality.
Mala is currently at the Formal Operational Stage of cognitive development. Jean Piaget defined this stage as starting about 11 years old and lasting till adulthood. Mala has reached a point in her development where she begins to think more maturely. - The Concrete Operational Stage occurs before the Formal Operational Stage, typically between ages 7-11. During this stage, toddlers can think logically, but focus on tangible things and situations.
- Five features of the Formal Operational Stage:
- Abstract Thinking: Individuals can now consider abstract concepts and hypothetical scenarios. Mala's ability to plan and coordinate events shows her ability to consider outside factors.
- Logical Reasoning: Adolescents develop deductive reasoning skills to apply broad concepts to specific situations, as seen by Mala's preparation for competitive tests.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Teens can recognize, analyze, and solve complicated problems methodically. Mala is trusted to coordinate an event, demonstrating her ability to tackle real-world challenges.
- Metacognition: Teens can improve their academic preparation by reflecting on their thoughts, questioning ideas, and monitoring their own learning processes. Mala is currently attending coaching classes.
- Idealism and Moral Reasoning: Adolescents acquire ideals and have a strong sense of morality and justice. They may analyze many ethical perspectives and consider ideal world scenarios.
