Cutting a ring around the stem disrupts the flow of sap in the phloem but not the xylem. The leaves continue to receive water from the xylem, while the lower part of the stem, which lacks organic nutrients from the phloem, may eventually stop growing and even die due to exhaustion of stored organic contents.
