  1. The given reaction represents the conversion of ATP to ADP. ATP is composed of a nitrogenous compound (adenine), pentose sugar (ribose) and three phosphate groups.
  2. These three phosphate groups are linked to one another by two high-energy bonds.
  3. When one phosphate group is removed by breaking a bond, energy is released, and ATP is converted to adenosine diphosphate (ADP).
