उत्तर

Varṇa and jāti were different forms of social classification in ancient Indian society. Varṇa was a broad four-fold division of society into brāhmaṇas, kṣhatriyas, vaiśhyas and śūdras, based mainly on their social roles and occupations. In contrast, jāti referred to the many smaller social groups that developed within society.

Various factors may have contributed to the formation of different jātis, such as occupation, regional and cultural differences, migration of communities, and intermarriage between different groups. Over time, groups with similar occupations, customs or social practices could develop into distinct jātis.

Thus, varṇa was a broad four-fold classification, while jāti consisted of numerous specific social groups that developed over time.
