Harappan cities like Mohenjodaro were divided into two distinct structural sectors: the Citadel and the Lower Town. The Citadel was a small, fortified area built high up on a massive mud-brick platform. It housed large public structures, warehouses, and administrative buildings used by the ruling elite. In contrast, the Lower Town was a much larger residential zone located on flat ground below the Citadel. This sector was designed for the general public, featuring tightly planned brick houses, individual courtyards, commercial shops, and a highly advanced street drainage network.
