- The sugarcane plant converts solar energy into chemical energy quite efficiently. When molasses, acquired during the manufacturing of sugar from sugarcane, is fermented, alcohol (ethanol) is produced.
- The only products of ethanol burning in sufficient air are carbon dioxide and water. In this sense, ethanol is a cleaner fuel.
As a result, in some countries, it is used as an addition to improve the efficiency of gasoline. Such a fuel is known as gasohol.
