Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21 May 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu while attending an election campaign meeting. He was killed in a suicide bomb attack. The case was investigated by the CBI, and the conspiracy was linked to members associated with the LTTE, which had opposed India’s involvement in Sri Lanka. Several other people were also killed and injured in the blast.
