The Assam Oil Blockade was part of the Assam Agitation, which began in 1979. The movement was led mainly by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and other organisations demanding the identification and removal of illegal immigrants from the electoral rolls. Protesters blocked roads, railways and the transportation of crude oil from Assam. Oil refineries were affected and the blockade caused serious economic losses and shortages. Government forces later acted to restore the movement of oil and maintain law and order.
