Explain the role of Union Parliament of India.

The Union Parliament of India plays an important role in the running of the Indian democracy. As the top legislative authority, it fulfils a number of critical functions to guarantee the country’s orderly functioning.

1. Law-making Role: Parliament is the main legislative body of the country. It establishes laws on issues mentioned in the Union List, Concurrent List, and, under certain conditions, the State List. It also addresses unlisted subjects.
2. Financial Role: Parliament manages the national finances. It passes the annual budget, approves taxes, and authorises all government spending. No money can be spent without Parliament's approval. The Lok Sabha has a greater influence in financial matters.
3. Executive Control: The Lok Sabha holds the Council of Ministers accountable. Parliament holds the administration accountable and ensures that it operates within the law by using mechanisms such as questions, debates, motions, and votes of no confidence.
4. Constitutional Role: Article 368 allows Parliament to change the Constitution. Some amendments require a special majority and approval from half of the state legislatures.
5. Judicial Role: Parliament has the power to impeach the President, remove Supreme Court and High Court judges, and punish those who violate parliamentary privileges.
