उत्तर
The process of German Unification was a major political transformation in the 19th century, led primarily by the state of Prussia.
- Failure of Liberal Efforts (1848): Initially, middle-class Germans attempted to combine the numerous German regions into a nation-state led by an elected parliament (the Frankfurt Parliament). The monarch, the military, and Prussia’s big landowners (Junkers) all opposed this liberal proposal.
- Prussia Takes the Lead: After the failure of the 1848 revolution, Prussia assumed leadership of the struggle for national unity. Its Chief Minister, Otto von Bismarck, was the architect of this process.
- Policy of “Blood and Iron”: Bismarck carried out the union with the assistance of the Prussian army and bureaucracy. He pursued a pragmatic and often aggressive stance to maintain Prussian dominance.
- Three Wars in Seven Years: Over a period of seven years, Prussia fought three wars with Austria, Denmark, and France. All three ended with a Prussian win, bringing the unification process to a close.
- Proclamation of the German Empire: In January 1871, the Prussian King, William I, was declared German Emperor during a ceremony conducted in the Palace of Versailles’ Hall of Mirrors.
- The New State: The newly unified German Empire placed an emphasis on modernising its currency, financial, legal, and judicial institutions, with Prussian practices serving as a model for the rest of Germany.
