Explain the functions of production department.

1. Product designing: Using the information supplied by the marketing department, the product is designed. Product design has two components: (i) Physical or form design, which refers to the product’s shape and size, and (ii) Functional design, which determines the functions the product is intended to perform.
2. Designing production system: A production system is the process through which inputs are converted into outputs. There are two primary types of production systems: (i) continuous or flow production and (ii) intermittent production. The design of the production system depends on the nature of the product and the scale of production.
3. Plant location: A suitable location for the plant or factory is selected to reduce production costs. Factors considered include proximity to raw materials, closeness to the market, availability of labour, land cost, transport and communication facilities, safety requirements, and climate.
4. Plant layout: Machinery, equipment, and other physical facilities are arranged efficiently within the factory to maximize space utilization and ensure a smooth and safe workflow.
5. Quality control: The Production Department establishes quality standards for each product. Methods such as inspections, control charts, TOM, quality audits, ISO certification, and other techniques are employed to maintain the desired quality.
