1. Two Russian republics, Chechnya and Dagestan, have had violent efforts to break away from Russia. As a result of Moscow’s bombing and other actions against the Chechen rebels, many people’s rights have been violated, but their desire for freedom has not been stopped.
2. Tajikistan had a 10-year civil war that ended in 2001. As a whole, the area has seen many religious disputes.
3. Some Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, which is in Azerbaijan, want to break away and join Armenia.
4. Two Georgian towns have declared independence, sparking a civil war.
5. In Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan, there are uprisings against the governments that are in power.
6. Provinces and countries are also fighting over land and water.
