Organisation of the High Court in India:

  1. Each High Court consists of a Chief Justice and other judges as decided by Parliament based on the court’s workload. For example, the Guwahati High Court has 3 judges, while the Allahabad High Court has 95.
  2. Judges are appointed by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, the Governor of the state, and the Chief Justice of the concerned High Court.
  3. A judge must be a citizen of India, and have at least 10 years experience as a High Court advocate or in a judicial office.
  4. Judges serve until the age of 62 and can only be removed by impeachment under the Judges Inquiry Act (1968).
  5. Judges can also be transferred or appointed temporarily as acting/additional judges when needed.
