General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) is a model developed by Hans Selye to explain the body’s response to stress. It describes how the body reacts in three stages when faced with a stressful situation:

  1. Alarm Stage: When we suddenly face a new or threatening situation, our body goes into a state of alarm. This is our body's first response to stress.
    1. A stressor triggers the release of hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.
    2. These hormones raise blood pressure, blood sugar, and prepare the body for “fight or flight.”
    3. The sympathetic nervous system gets activated, causing fast breathing, increased heart rate, and more energy to handle the challenge.
    4. In this stage, our body’s natural balance (homeostasis) is disturbed.
  2. Resistance Stage: If the stress continues, the body tries to adjust and cope with the situation.
    1. The initial shock fades, and the body adapts to the stressor.
    2. You might feel okay on the outside, but inside your body is still working hard.
    3. Hormones are still being released, and your blood pressure may stay high.
    4. You may think you’re handling stress well, but your body is still under pressure.
    5. If the stress ends here, the body begins to recover and return to normal.
    6. But if the stress continues for too long, the body stays in this “alert” mode, which can be harmful over time.
  3. Exhaustion Stage: If stress continues for a long time without relief, the body’s ability to resist wears out.
    • Energy levels drop, and the body becomes physically and mentally tired.
    • The immune system weakens, making you more prone to illness.
    • This can lead to burnout, where you feel exhausted, unmotivated, and pessimistic.
    • If not managed, this stage may result in serious health issues and emotional problems.
