To showcase the Earth’s relief features. The primary methods employed include hachures, hill shading, form lines, and contours.

  1. Hachures: They are short, unconnected lines that follow the slope. They depict the direction of free-flowing water down a hill.
  2. Hill Shading: The hill shading method uses the ‘light and shadow effect’ to depict relief in a region. This method assumes that the shadows of landforms appear when a source of light, such as a large lamp, illuminates the relief model.
  3. Form-lines: Form-lines are broken contour lines that connect sites with the same height above sea level. These images simply show the overall pattern of the ground and do not provide specific height information. This strategy is used when precise data is unavailable for complex relief areas.
  4. Colour Method: Different colours represent different heights and landforms (e.g., green for plains, brown for hills).
  5. Spot Heights, Bench Marks, and Trigonometrical Stations:
    1. Spot heights: Dots showing exact elevation.
    2. Benchmarks: Surveyed points marked permanently.
    3. Trigonometrical stations: Points used for map triangulation, shown with a triangle.
  6. Layer Tints: Different height zones are coloured in bands to show elevation ranges (also called hypsometric tinting).
  7. Contours: Lines joining places of equal height; the most accurate method of spacing shows slope steepness.
