Wind erosion is the process by which the wind removes, transports, and deposits materials, primarily in arid and semi-arid regions where vegetation is sparse. The first key process is deflation, where the wind lifts and removes loose particles like sand, dust, and small rocks from the surface. This causes the land to be gradually lowered, leading to the formation of deflation hollows, which are depressions or shallow basins created by the removal of material. The second process is abrasion, where windblown particles, especially sand, strike and wear away surfaces, such as rocks and other objects. Over time, this abrasive action smooths and polishes these surfaces, resulting in the creation of features like ventifacts (rocks shaped by wind abrasion) and rock pedestals. Together, these processes lead to the formation of distinctive landforms like sand dunes and deflation hollows, which are typical of desert landscapes shaped by wind erosion.
