The geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere continuously exchange energy and matter. For example, snowfall (cryosphere) melts and feeds lakes and rivers (hydrosphere); water evaporates into the atmosphere, falls as rain, supports plants (biosphere), and erodes rocks/soil (geosphere). If snowfall decreases over several winters, lake levels fall, less grass grows, and sheep herders are affected showing how a disturbance in one sphere changes the whole delicately balanced system.
