During his research on Staphylococci bacteria, Alexander Fleming discovered a mold in one of his unwashed culture plates that prevented the bacteria from developing. Penicillin, named after the mold Pencillium notatum, was discovered as a result of a substance generated by it. Later, Ernest Chain and Howard Florey realized its full potential as an antibiotic.
