In honeybees, fertilization of an egg by a sperm produces a female, while an unfertilized egg develops into a male through parthenogenesis. The females are diploid with 32 chromosomes, whereas the males are haploid with 16 chromosomes.

In contrast, in humans both males and females are diploid, possessing 23 pairs of chromosomes. Females have 44 autosomes with XX sex chromosomes, and males have 44 autosomes with XY sex chromosomes.

In humans, the process of cell division known as meiosis creates gametes; in honeybees, the process varies for males and females:

  • Meiosis creates female gametes.
  • Mitosis creates male gametes.
