Horace Danby loved rare and costly books very much. To buy them, he committed one robbery every year. He carefully chose Shotover Grange for his next theft and studied the house plan for two weeks. He learned that the family had gone to London and the servants had gone to the movies. When the house was empty, he entered it quietly.
He took the key from its usual place and even patted the dog so it would not bark. He went to the drawing room, where the safe was hidden behind a painting, and stole jewellery worth many pounds. He believed the stolen money would help him buy the books he wanted. However, he was suffering from hay fever, and the smell of flowers in the room made him sneeze.
