- The Mauryan Empire was founded by Chandragupta Maurya, who united a large part of the Indian subcontinent under one powerful empire. He established a strong system of administration with officials and an army. Later, Ashoka became one of its most famous rulers. After the Kalinga War, Ashoka adopted the policy of dhamma and promoted peace, tolerance and good conduct.
- The Mauryan Empire was established around 322 BCE and continued until about 185 BCE.
- This event is important because it was one of the first large empires in the Indian subcontinent. It created a strong system of administration and governance and connected many different regions. Under Ashoka, Buddhism and the ideas of dhamma also spread widely. The Mauryan period therefore played an important role in the political and cultural development of ancient India.
