Several Indian leaders played an important role in strengthening grassroots democracy by supporting rural development and encouraging people to participate in governance. Mahatma Gandhi promoted the idea of Gram Swaraj, in which villages would be self-reliant and people would make decisions at the local level. Vinoba Bhave started the Bhoodan Movement, encouraging people to voluntarily donate land to help the landless and reduce inequality in villages. Jayaprakash Narayan supported the decentralisation of power and emphasised the importance of people’s participation in village-level decision-making. Together, these efforts strengthened the idea that democracy works better when power is shared and decision-making reaches the grassroots. They helped make democracy more inclusive, participatory and responsive to the needs of rural communities.
