Looks can be deceiving. Nicola and Jacopo were both 13 and 12 year-old boys. They were not dressed well. The author met them for the first time when they were selling wild strawberries. Since then, they have been seen shining shoes, setting up seats for the opera, showing tourists around town, and other things. No one would have thought that two boys their age would work so hard. They always ate black bread and figs and wore worn-out clothes. With the money they made, they could have bought better food and clothes. Even though they made a lot of money, they never spent any of it on themselves because they had to pay for their sister's hospital bills.
