This is the story of Franz, a young man who saw his education as both a chore and a teacher. M. Hamel, who thought teaching, a noble profession, was a comedy. But in the latter part of the narrative, it was only M. Hamel who made Franz regret not taking the French language seriously and continued to praise it as the most rational and understandable.
